Career PATH
France (FFF): 1994–2008
Until 2022, Lilian Thuram held the record as France’s most-capped player, earning 142 appearances. His most iconic moment came in the 1998 World Cup semi-final, when he scored the only two goals of his international career to send France into their first-ever final. He went on to lift both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, cementing his place in one of the most successful generations in French football history.
AS Monaco: 1991–1996
Thuram’s professional career began under Arsène Wenger at Monaco, with his first-team breakthrough arriving in the 1992–93 season. During his time there, he helped the club win the 1990–91 Coupe de France and reach the semi-finals of the 1991–92 Cup Winners’ Cup.
Parma Calcio 1913: 1996–2001
A move to Parma elevated Thuram to the top tier of Serie A defenders, where he lined up alongside Gianluigi Buffon and Fabio Cannavaro. In 1998–99, he played a central role in the club’s historic treble-winning season, claiming the UEFA Cup, Coppa Italia, and Italian Super Cup.
Juventus FC: 2001–2006
Joining Juventus in a record-breaking transfer, Thuram bolstered an already formidable backline. Over five seasons, he was a consistent and reliable presence, notably helping the team reach the 2003 Champions League final.
FC Barcelona: 2006–2008
In the final chapter of his playing career, Thuram brought leadership and depth to Barcelona’s defence. He lifted the 2006 Spanish Super Cup and made 58 appearances in all competitions.
Post-Playing Career
Since retiring in 2008, Thuram has emerged as a prominent social activist and public intellectual in France. Through the Lilian Thuram Foundation for Education Against Racism, he works to combat discrimination via education and public engagement. He has authored books on racism and identity and regularly speaks on social justice issues, using his platform to advocate for equality and human rights.
